Have you seen the black bear in northeast Iowa? Kate Delagardelle took this photo just outside of Cedar Falls recently.

While there's no established population of bears in Iowa, they are native to the state. Growing populations in nearby states mean that we occasionally have a bear wander through.

If you see a bear or find tracks or scat that might indicate a bear, contact your local DNR wildlife staff or conservation officer. More info is available at the link about bears and other wildlife visitors to Iowa.

Bears and Other Occasional Wildlife Visitors to Iowa
Populations of large mammals, once native to Iowa, have been gone from the Iowa landscape for 80 to 100 years. While we no longer have breeding populations of these animals in Iowa, growing populations in nearby states brings some wandering visitors.
