Default Klepingers to lead Fourth of July parade as grand marshals

In less than two weeks, downtown Newton will once again grow by hundreds to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday with the annual parade.

As part of the Newton Chamber of Commerce’s celebration, Nick and Linda Klepinger have been selected as grand marshal’s to lead the parade, which starts at 9:30 a.m.

“We had three amazing nominations this year. I was pleased with the quality of all nominations that we received,” chamber of commerce executive director Amanda Price said.

When selecting the Klepingers, the chamber board of directors took into account not only the quality of the nomination but the dedication of the nominee in their service to the community and/or the country. Price said the board asked three questions: Why should this person/s be grand marshal, what contributions has this person(s) made to our community/country and describe how this person(s) has helped to make Newton a better place to live, work and play? In the Klepingers, the board received glowing answers for all.

In this expert from the Klepingers’ nomination letter, the board learned about the background of the couple along with the work they continue to do in the community, especially in the field of art. It reads:

“Linda is the director of the Centre For Arts and Artists. She is on the board of the Iowa Sculpture Festival, and she coordinates the annual fifth-grade sculpture tour. She is responsible for bringing numerous artists and works of art to our community ... Nick volunteers his time to site sculptures around Newton and does whatever work is needed at the Centre for Arts and Artists.

“Linda and Nick are tireless workers for the arts in Newton. Linda speaks at civic functions, clubs and groups, promoting Newton and the arts. Linda and Nick are true ambassadors for Newton. They are always looking for ways to bring people to Newton, and they are very welcoming and supportive of people who move here. Linda and Nick exemplify the best of what is Newton — they promote the town, but never themselves. They are both very generous with their time and their money and their efforts in the support of Newton and its citizens. They focus on the positive and, again, truly are goodwill ambassadors for our community.”

Price said the chamber would like to thank everyone who submitted nominations for this year’s grand marshals.
